Finding Inspiration in Every Human
Our Mission
To diversify the coast by breaking down barriers and connecting BIPOC, low-income, and inner-city youth to the ocean’s transformative and healing power.
Our Vision
A world where everyone, regardless of background, has equal access to the ocean, fostering a diverse and empowered community of ocean stewards.

how it all started
Paddle for Peace was born out of a moment of deep pain and a collective need for healing. In 2020, during the George Floyd protests and the Black Lives Matter movement, our founder Risa, a biracial woman and surfer—felt called to create a space for her community to grieve, find solace, and stand against injustice. The ocean, which had always been her refuge, became the setting for a powerful paddle out to honor the lives lost.
What started as a small gathering of friends turned into thousands of people from across Southern California lining the shores in solidarity. That day sparked a vision: the ocean should always be a place of healing, not just for one day, but for the future. And from that vision, Paddle for Peace was born, with a mission to diversify the coast and make it a welcoming space where people can learn, play, and heal together..
